I wanted to spend a moment talking about water filtration and purification.
As you know water is a very important element of life. Clean, safe drinking water is not an option. In war, more people die of disease and famine than from bullets or bombs. This is largely due to tainted water or improper sanitation habits like waste disposal. It doesn't take long for people to contract diseases from unsafe drinking water.
There is a particular water filter that I highly recommend and I will link it below. But one must understand there is a difference between filtration and purification. Even filtered water could be unsafe. It needs to be boiled or have another component put in it to make it potable. I will link purification tablets below as well but understand that regular bleach can be used. Just make sure it is regular bleach and not the concentrated form or any of the scented varieties. You should use 4–5 drops of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water, or 16 drops if the water is cloudy. This is just under ¼ of a teaspoon per gallon. You should double the amount of bleach if the water is colored, very cold, or cloudy. You can also boil the water to purify it. Bring the clear, filtered water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes).
If something major happens and you have not been able to acquire a filter you are not out of luck. There are many filters you can make from scavenged items. You can make your own water filter from an empty bottle, rocks, sand, crushed regular charcoal, cotton, cheesecloth, or fine material. See the diagram below.
