Communications are extremely important. I can even remember being taught as a Police Explorer that the radio was a Police Officer's most important tool which is true. Without being able to communicate with other officers or with dispatch, that officer is essentially alone.

In preparedness, I often mention "those most important to you". Now you may be thinking I am referring to family, friends, or loved ones in general. That is not the case. After a major event, those most important to you are those people within walking distance. That may include or exclude your loved ones.

Being able to communicate with those individuals without having to take a walk is essential. Being able to relay important information, receive important information, or even call for help will be a primary concern. A cheap radio from Amazon can help you achieve that. I do not recommend going to Walmart and buying a set of FRS or even GMRS radios. The options and capability on those along with the range are extremely limited. You can buy a fairly decent Baofeng radio from Amazon for anywhere from $25 - $40 and you can get good deals on buying multiple radios at once. We personally have Baofeng UV-5XP radios which are 8 watt and cover both the 2m and 70cm radio bands. We have ours programmed with the FRS and GMRS frequencies along with the frequencies of the local repeaters.

But I don't have a license you might say. Me either. My technician's license expired over a couple of decades ago. And while I want to get a new one I do not currently have one. The laws allow anyone to use amateur radio frequencies in case of emergency. I do suggest you get a license but I recommend getting the radio now and working on getting your license. You can contact Okaw Valley Amateur Radio Club to do so.

The radio versions change faster than a green light when you are in a hurry so being able to tell you what is the best model is pointless. If you have questions about which model is a good choice when you are ready to purchase you can Contact Me. You DO NOT need to buy a high-dollar radio. People who insist you have to have all the high-dollar gear are what I like to call Gucci Preppers. Knowledge is more important than brand names. ALWAYS remember that.
